Mumbai Diary - The Gateway Of India

Located on the Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai, overlooking Arabian sea stands this magnificent monument named Gateway Of India. It was constructed to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. Designed by architect George Wittet this monument was opened on 4th Dec 1924 by the viceroy, the Earl of Reading.

A very popular tourist spot and of course overcrowded too. Don't forget to carry your sun cap and sunglasses. We spent about an hour or so there , the sun was very unkind that day.

Took lots of pictures, strolled all around the monument many times. Taj Palace  Hotel is just a stone throw away from GOI. Tried one of the many  local photographers for family clicks and glad that the pictures came out fabulous.  Not sharing those pictures here. I do recommend that you carry a pen drive or hard drive so that you can save the original clicks as you are handover ed  the printed version only.

You will find many agents approaching you for selling  Ferry Boat Trip to Elephant Caves. There are ample boats available at regular intervals.

The design of Gateway is a combination of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The archs follow Muslim design while the decorations depict Hindu style.

Below is a view from the ferry boat which shows the majestic monument, Taj Palace Hotel and Mumbai docks.

The temple was opened in 14th January 1978. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple but one can take pictures around the complex.

It is an extremely beautiful and well maintained temple. The prasad distributed outside the temple is simply divine.

Our taxi driver insisted that we see Shahrukh Khan's house  "Mannat" located at Bandstand in South Bandra. It is a heritage bungalow which King Khan bought in the yeat 2005.

Later Khan built a six floor house right behind the heritage bungalow .

The house faces the beautiful seashore.
